SPORTDiscus: Saving results

Use this guide to help you search SPORTDiscus more effectively and to find out how to manage your search results. After reading this introductory page, click each heading in the following row of tabs:

General Principles

We highly recommend that you:

  • Select any individual search results that are of potential value to your work.
  • Save multiple back-up copies of those selected results in various locations (e.g. email, USB stick, hard drive). Even experienced researchers can lose information and you need good records of all the sources of information you use in order to avoid plagiarism.
  • When you save a result in a database, you save its core bibliographic details (title, author, journal, keywords and possibly an abstract) rather than its full content.

Saving search results: basic methods

1. Click/select the box to the left of each individual result that's of potential interest to you. Alternatively, click the small arrow just to the right of the number of results displayed. You'll then see options for either saving 50 results or "all" your results (capped at 25,000).

Once you've selected your results, a row of icons appears to the right.

2. Saving results as a file: click the arrow/download icon. A pop-up window then displays
a list of formats (e.g. PDF and CSV). Select one or more formats and click 'download'.

Options for downloading individual results.

3. EndNote: to export your selected results/references to EndNote, click the following 'cite' icon and then select 'EndNote':

4. Email your selected results (either to yourself or someone else) by clicking the following 'forward arrow' icon: . Then select the email tab, enter the relevant email address and click 'Send'.

Saving results to your EBSCOHost account

You can select and save individual results within your EBSCOHost account and retrieve them the next time you enter the database. You may also find this option helpful if running multiple searches during a single session and want to save/email all your results in one step towards the end. To do this:

1.
select/tick the boxes next to the results you want to save and then click the following 'save' icon, (just above your results):

2. C
lick the saved option in the left-hand column taking you to a new screen. On the new screen, you can opt to further re-select any results you still wish to save and click the '3' vertical dots' to the right to open a menu of options: downloading to a file; sharing/emailing; sending to EndNote via 'cite'; adding to a project.
