Referencing in Overleaf: Collecting references

Importing references from a database

For any databases you use to download references select the BibTex file, as this one will correspond with Overleaf.

For example in Compendex I’ve found an article I’m interested in and will download the BibTeX option:

As described above

Then you can drag and drop the BibTeX file into your Overleaf bibliography file or open it with a text editor such as Notepad and select the contents you want to include and copy and paste it into the bibliography:

Importing references from Endnote Online

You can collect your references in reference management software such as Endnote Online or Zotero and then export all of them as BibTeX files.

In EndNote Online go to ‘format’ then ‘export references’ then choose which collection of references you want to export next to ‘references’ then choose the export style to be ‘BibTeX Export’ then press ‘save’ which will then download your references.

As described

Importing references from Zotero

For Zotero, the easiest way to import references is to link Overleaf to your Zotero library, however, if you want to import references manually from Zotero go to ‘file’ then ‘export Library’.

as described

Then choose ‘BibTeX’ followed by ‘OK’

as described

Then paste the file into the bib bibliography in Overleaf.

Link to Zotero from Overleaf

Firstly go to the import button on the top right of Overleaf:

as described

Go to ‘from Zotero’ then ‘link to Zotero’ where you’ll be prompted to sign in to your Zotero Library.

as above

Then you will be invited to create a bibliography file:

as described

Then you can choose to ‘refresh’ to update your references from your Zotero library.

as described

Then in your text you need to make sure you have linked your bibliography to this file e.g. \bibliography{references}.
