Open Access: Acknowledging Funders

Acknowledging your funders

Acknowledgement of funding should be a sentence with the funding agency written out in full, followed by the grant number in square brackets, e.g.:

This work was supported by the Medical Research Council [grant number xxxx]

Multiple grant numbers should be separated by comma and space. Where the research was supported by more than one agency, the different agencies should be separated by a semicolon, with “and” before the final funder, e.g.:

This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]; the Arts and Humanities Research Council [grant number zzzz]; and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council [grant number XXXX]. Your grant reference number must be included.

UKRI rights retention statement:

For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution CC BY licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising

Note: as of 1 January 2025, for University of Bath staff, the inclusion of a rights retention statement is optional in the majority of cases, as rights are retained by default as part of the University Ordinances 22.3 e). See our Self archiving and copyright approach pages for more information.

Data access statement:

You must include a data access statement in your article, explaining how the underpinning data can be accessed -  this statement should be included even if there are no data or if the data are inaccessible.  Example data access statements can be found here: Data Access Statements. Guidance on the storage and management of research data is available from the Research Data Service: Storage and Management of Research Data.

If you are funded by Wellcome, you should list Wellcome and your grant number in all your research outputs to which their funding contributed.

Make sure your acknowledgement is included in the funding or any other relevant section and contains the name(s) of your funder(s) in full contains all grant reference numbers in square brackets, e.g.:

This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [grant number]

If you have more than one Wellcome grant, separate each grant number with a comma and space. If you need to acknowledge more than one funder, separate each one with a semi-colon, e.g.:

This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [grant number], [grant number]; Cancer Research UK [grant number]; another funder [grant number]; etc.

You should include a rights retention statement in the covering letter that accompanies the submission and the funding acknowledgement section of the manuscript, as follows:

This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Wellcome Trust [Grant number]. For the purpose of Open Access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.

Note: as of 1 January 2025, for University of Bath staff, the inclusion of a rights retention statement is optional in the majority of cases, as rights are retained by default as part of the University Ordinances 22.3 e). See our Self archiving and copyright approach pages for more information.

BHF-funded papers should normally be submitted to a fully open access journal, a journal in our open access agreements, or a subscription journal that allows the accepted manuscript to be made open access in PubMed Central as soon as possible, and no later than six months after publication.

It is a condition of grant that grant-holders acknowledge BHF support by quoting British Heart Foundation followed by the award reference number in the acknowledgement section of all publications arising from BHF-funded research.

Acknowledgement of funding should be a sentence with the funding agency written out in full, followed by the grant number in square brackets, e.g.:

This work was supported by Horizon [grant number xxxx]

Horizon grant-holders must include the following rights retention statement in their submission of original research to a peer-reviewed journal:

For the purpose of Open Access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.

Note: as of 1 January 2025, for University of Bath staff, the inclusion of a rights retention statement is optional in the majority of cases, as rights are retained by default as part of the University Ordinances 22.3 e). See our Self archiving and copyright approach pages for more information.

Please state the sources of funding including grant number for each author. We suggest the following format:

This work was supported by the Royal Society [grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]; the Natural Environment Research Council [grant number zzzz]; and the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number aaaa].

All recipients of a Royal Society award are encouraged to publish peer-reviewed accepted articles and conference proceedings in open access journals. As a minimum, award holders are expected to follow green routes for open access by publishing in a journal which allows deposit of the accepted manuscript version in an institutional or subject repository with no embargo period on access. Use a rights retention statement in the acknowledgements section to ensure compliance:

For the purpose of Open Access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.

Note: as of 1 January 2025, for University of Bath staff, the inclusion of a rights retention statement is optional in the majority of cases, as rights are retained by default as part of the University Ordinances 22.3 e). See our Self archiving and copyright approach pages for more information.

Funder acknowledgements generally follow a standard format:

This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust [grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]; the Natural Environment Research Council [grant number zzzz]; and the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number aaaa]."

Example taken from https://esrc.ukri.org/funding/guidance-for-grant-holders/acknowledging-esrc-in-journal-articles/.

Some research facilities may require you to acknowledge different grant numbers depending on the piece of equipment you’ve used - check with the facility to make sure you’re following their preferred format.
